Ethereum at 10: Decentralized in Name, Centralized in Practice (Still Not Financial Advice)

Let me start with a confession.
Yes, I made money on Ethereum. I was there early—back when ETH cost less than a Starbucks order and didn’t cost your soul to transfer. I stacked my bags around $6, smiled as it rocketed, and thought, “Wow, this might actually be something.”

Fast-forward to today, and I’m side-eyeing the entire Ethereum ecosystem like it’s that one ex who “found themselves” in a pyramid scheme. I even lost a whole ETH thanks to a compromised MetaMask wallet. I suspect the Geek Squad was involved, but that’s another story. (Thanks for the memories, Best Buy.)

Now here we are. Ten years in, Ethereum powers billions in DeFi. But Vitalik Buterin, the chain’s philosophical Gandalf, just dropped a bomb at ETHCC 2025: adoption alone isn’t progress. And for once, I agree with him.

🧵 Decentralized… Like Your HOA?

Buterin asked the hard question: Is Ethereum still serving its original mission of decentralization and user freedom?
Spoiler: No. It’s giving “Web3” with a hefty dose of Web2 control.

Let’s do the test:

  • Can a dev team change the protocol at will? Yup.

  • Can they freeze funds or pull rug-level upgrades? You bet.

  • Is your dApp hosted on a centralized server that crashes when someone sneezes? Naturally.

We’ve got “decentralized” apps still operating with admin keys, upgrade rights, and front-ends hosted on single domains. It’s like calling a gated community “off-grid.”

And don’t even get me started on MetaMask harvesting IPs or Infura filtering transactions by region. This ain’t decentralization—it’s surveillance wrapped in Solidity.

💸 Who’s Actually in Control?

Ethereum is now the spiritual home of tech bros, VC firms, and regulatory bootlickers—all pretending they’re liberating the masses while arguing about gas fees and fork drama. DAOs? More like Feudal Lords with Discord mods. Governance “votes” are won by whales with 80% of the tokens.

That’s not a community. That’s a shareholder meeting in a cult robe.

Let’s not forget the Tornado Cash debacle and the magical “compliance filters” that showed up afterward. If censorship-resistance is optional, it’s not real. If privacy is paywalled, it’s not freedom. And if my wallet needs Google Translate and a PhD to bridge chains, it’s not usable.

🚪The Real Test: Can You Walk Away?

Buterin laid out a few real tests:

  1. Walk-away Test – Can the project run without the dev team? Most can’t.

  2. Insider Attack Test – Can someone inside nuke the system? Most can.

  3. Trusted Computing Base – How many layers of BS does your dApp depend on? Too many.

And yet people wonder why we keep preaching Bitcoin First.

Bitcoin doesn’t care if your cousin’s yield farm is on fire. It doesn’t run on upgradeable smart contracts. It doesn’t need to partner with JPMorgan. It’s math, not marketing.

🎭 Love the Tech, Hate the Circus

Let me be clear: I love the idea of Ethereum. It was revolutionary. But what it’s become? A bloated, gas-choked, VC-fueled MMORPG with “decentralization” plastered over its Terms of Service.

That’s why I built LearnBitcoin.net—because people deserve real education, not another protocol promising freedom while serving a side of KYC salad.

And yes, I’m still here. Still writing. Still building. I’ve got a few things cooking—an app, a token, maybe a marketplace—but I’ll keep the alpha vague for now. Just know this: we’re not selling out. We’re building something better.

🧠 Final Thought

Ethereum isn’t dead—it’s just having an identity crisis. And while the ecosystem tries to figure out what it wants to be when it grows up, I’ll be stacking sats and teaching others how to do the same.

Not financial advice. Just painfully honest.
